vigil that will take place here at the newtown high school. you see the folks are gathering. they're trying to comfort each other. we're watching what's going on as the president of the united states. he has arrived here. he flew from the white house, from andrews air force base outside of the white house in suburban maryland, flew to hartford and then drove. the weather here is not good right now, so he could not chopper -- could not come over by marine one. had to drive from hartford, an hour, hour and a half drive from here, and we're in newtown watching what's going on. all of these makeshift memorials have just sprung up. you can't -- you can virtually not even drive through the small streets of newtown right now it's so, croso crowded. people are bringing candles, flowers, candles, teddy bears, legos. we're getting ready for what will be a very, very emotional memorial service. i'm wolf blitzer reporting here from newtown. anderson cooper is right down the street. he's near the high school. he's joining us as well. anderson? >> yeah, that's right, wolf. i'm actually right ri

"newsroom" starts now. good morning. thank you for being with us today. i'm carol costello in atlanta. first a small step toward normally in newtown, connecticut. soledad o'brien joins us live. good morning, soledad. >> reporter: good morning to you, carol. as you said, classes resume today for most of the kids in this community, so many wrestling with so much heartbreak, all of the newtown schools except for sandy hook elementary will reopen. grief and the fears of returning students an additional concern. police officers will be at every single school and today the town will lay to rest, the grandmother of char
you notice is relief. aspercreme. >>> christmas also accompanied by sadness and grief, in newtown, connecticut people are still mourning for the 20 children and six adults who were killed when a gunman burst into their school and opened fire. this round-the-clock vigil is under way in remembrance of the shooting victims. a candle was lit in honor of each of them. volunteers are asked to take half hour shifts to keep the candles burning. the vigil started at midnight and will continue until 11:59 tonight. the tragedy in newtown was followed by an outpouring of support from around the world and from nearby communities. today the entire newtown police department is actually getting christmas day off thanks to the generosity of their fellow officers. police from neighboring towns volunteered to fill in so that newtown officers could spend christmas with their families. joining us on the phone newtown police chief michael kehoe. he has been through quite a lot and your officers have been through quite a lot as well as the community. give us a sense of what this means for them to simply

this is reported i thought was redundant, like saying president obama's speech in n newtown was a call to scripture and prayer. it wasn't what he was talking about but he referenced scripture and prayer. the first words out of his mouth, the lord is already near, come, let us adore him. it was a spiritual message. in the middle of the message he reflected on the traditional family which we know the church supports and has long supported. and defended. and he made glancing reference to our personal selfishness and said that's a threat to the family. people not wanting to make commitments. and therefore give of their time and their energy to have families in the first place. and then he made reference to this manipulation of nature. but he never mentioned gay marriage. he never mentioned gay people in there. so i think, you know, it is it was certainly one can interpret that was the focus of what he was talking about in that particular paragraph. but i think to characterize the whole message that way is reductive. he was calling all of us to task for various failings, in our personal lives, and i thi
